Not just writing

I didn’t forget I have a blog. I just got tied up on writing. I wrote a bunch of words and it kind of ate up all my blogging time. Not to mention my relaxing time and my time for all the other things outside of the day job.

I tend to do a lot of thinking on my commute. Sometimes I’m just planning out projects or my week. Other times, I’m thinking about how to do life differently. This week, I realized I hadn’t really planned for this to become specifically a writing blog.

My notebook has a pile of ideas for blog stuff but I’m not really up for doing any of that right now.

Instead here’s a song I’ve been listening to a lot. Followed by some math.

Math

So remember how I told you Word counts aren’t the enemy but they shouldn’t be your boss either?

I did some math the other day and figured out if I could write 20 words per minute for 45 minutes, I could write 900 words in that time. If I took a 15 minute break and then did it again, I could write 1800 words in 1 hour 45 minutes. All good so far.

If I did just one 900 word session a day, I could write 100K in 112 days.

It’s hard for me to start on anything but one I do, It’s even harder to get me to stop. Remember heroic word counts? I was clocking 2.3K+ a day for most of the week. My total count on the practice project is just a few words shy of 30K. For a throwaway project I meant to have wrapped by 25K (and we’re not wrapped yet). Yeah. This is unnecessary encouragement to do the bad thing (spend all my time writing at the cost of mental health, sleep, and other projects).

By necessity, I had to slow down the last two days but I even put in 900 words on Friday and I almost never write on Friday.

I’d like to blame this all on math but this is me doing very me things.

I’m going to try real hard to limit myself to one 45 minute session most week days. And get back on my Spanish, blogging, and a few other things.

On-topic reminder: Treat yourself well, folks.
