The weight

For years and years, I’ve had a pile of computer bits I couldn’t get rid of without tossing to the landfill. A lot was mine but my old roommate left an at-least-equal pile odd cables, drives, ISA cards(!), and other miscellaneous odds and ends behind when he moved out. I’d taken the heat for all of it when he was still living with me but I couldn’t find a way to get rid of it.

My city doesn’t—didn’t—have electronics recycling. A coworker agreed to take it to his city’s dump but we never coordinated the handoff because I felt bad about asking even though he’d offered.

I have a project to get my place cleaned up. I started on it two years ago and made some pretty decent progress but that office kept staring at me ominously. My current roommate and I were talking after I hoed out another batch of mess. We were talking about how to get rid of the electronics and on a whim, I searched again.

It turns out there’s now a 24 hour drop off that takes all the kinds of things I have. My back will sass me about this in the morning, but I hauled two full totes, a stereo, and a desktop computer out to the car and we took a late night drive to drop it all off.

I was so thrilled on the way back, I wanted to roll down the window and shout “Woohoo!”

Maybe some day soon my office will be usable for office things!
